The Golden Rule of Lean MVP Engineering
A Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is not a broken or half-baked product. An MVP is the fastest, simplest version of your software that delivers real, measurable value to your target users.
Too many early-stage founders spend 6 to 12 months building an exhaustive list of features before talking to a single paying customer, burning precious runway in the process.
The Core-Value Test
Before adding any feature to your sprint backlog, ask this essential question:
"If our application had only this one feature, would it still solve our user's core problem?"
If the answer is no, that feature is likely secondary and should be deferred to Version 2.
Features to Prioritize First (The "Must-Haves")
- Frictionless User Authentication: Secure email login or Google/GitHub OAuth with instant onboarding.
- The Primary Value Workflow: The exact action that solves the problem (e.g. creating an invoice, booking a service, generating a report).
- Monetization & Checkout: A straightforward Stripe payment gateway to test willingness to pay from day one.
- Event Telemetry & Feedback: Product analytics (PostHog, Mixpanel) to observe where users drop off.
Features to Defer to Version 2 (The "Nice-to-Haves")
- Complex team hierarchy and multi-tenant sub-organizations (unless selling strictly enterprise B2B).
- Custom themes, dark mode toggle, and appearance customizations.
- Gamification, badges, and automated referral programs.
- Custom integrations with 20 different CRMs before customers ask for them.
